Equipment Needs
  • One or two long tug of war ropes. If that is not available tying together rope or jump ropes will probably work just fine.
Facility/Playground Needs Blacktop
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive): For students to work together in a positive manner.
Teaching Hints:
  • Have the students who are turning the rope do so at a safe speed.
  • No putdowns or negative comments allowed.
  • If there is more than one group, give points for cooperation and positive comments.
  • Make sure those turning the rope get a chance to jump.
Description:

Three to nine players stand next to the rope. On the signal, the outside players turn the rope and all the inside players jump.

Alternatives/Modifications
  • Start with three or four jumpers and increase the number.
  • Have students run in and start jumping.
  • Set a designated number of consecutive jumps and have them try to reach it. When they do, see if they can break their record number of jumps.
  • Have jumpers hold or bounce a ball.
