Teacher & School: Zack Dee, Petaluma Junior High
Activity Grade Level
The Tadpole 5 - 6
Equipment Needs
  • Hoops (enough for half the class)
  • A foam ball
Facility/Playground Needs Blacktop or field.
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive): To have students cooperate to achieve a common goal.
Teaching Hints:
  • No negative comments or putdowns are allowed.
Description:

Place all the hoops but one in a circle in the middle of the playing area. Place the extra hoop 5-10 feet away from the circle. Divide the class into two groups. Group A makes a line behind the extra hoop with the first person standing in the hoop. Group B stands inside the hoops which is placed in the circle.

On the command, the first person in A runs around the circle created by B and tags the next person in line that has stepped into the hoop. Meanwhile, B is passing the ball around the circle, adding one point to the running score each time the ball is successfully caught.

When every child in A has finished running, B must stop. The number they have reached is the number to beat next time. The groups then switch places.

Alternatives/Modifications
  • Add in another ball.
  • Instead of running around the circle, have students do different locomotor patterns i.e. skipping, hopping, leaping, etc.
  • Make the circle bigger or smaller depending how difficult you’d like to make the passing.
  • Give points for positive comments and teamwork.
