Cross-Over Blanket Volleyball 6
Equipment Needs

For each pair of teams of 5 - 7 each:

  • A volleyball net (rope will work also)
  • 2 blankets
  • balls (as many and which ever kind you wish to use)
Facility/Playground Needs Blacktop or field
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive): For students to work together to accomplish a common goal.
Teaching Hints:
  • Make sure a different student is crossing over each time.
  • No putdowns allowed.
Description:

Arrange groups of 5-7 players. Having an even number of groups will work best so that each student will get maximum participation time. If there are four groups, then you’ll want to have 2 nets or ropes up, so that 2 games can happen at once.

One team is on each side of the net. Each team holds a blanket, keeping the net side open. One team starts with the ball on the blanket and tries to flip it over the net to the other team. As soon as the ball leaves the blanket, one player from the “sending team" crosses under the net and joins the other team. The receiving team tries to catch the ball in the blanket and return it to the other team.

Each time the ball is returned, a player crosses under the net. One “collective” point is awarded to the group each time the ball crosses over the net and is successfully caught.

Alternatives/Modifications
  • Try the same game with more than one player crossing under the net after each toss.
  • Play the same game with different types and sizes of balls.
  • Play the same game with two or more balls--all balls must be tossed together.
  • Give points for cooperation and positive comments made.
