Activity Grade Level
Hula-Hula-Hoopla! 2
Equipment Needs
  • Music: Jock Jams1
  • hula hoop for each student
  • CD or tape player
Facility/Playground Needs Classroom or blacktop
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive):

Develop spatial awareness through movement using hula hoops as a parameter

Teaching Hints:

You can assess those students having problems in certain areas of movement and direction, and moving to the beat. You can always have your own hoop to demonstrate movements or to just join in with the students. Have a signal for starting and stopping.

Description:

Students are in scattered formation far enough apart to not interfere with classmates' movements.-The dance begins with a simple "march" to the beat of the music inside the hoop.

  • March to the beat with one foot in the hoop and one foot out and circle around the hoop clockwise.
  • Reverse, going counterclockwise.-Jump inside the hoop.
  • Jump out to the Right and back inside.-Jump out to the Left and back inside.-March and step in and out of the hoop using Right, Left, Front, Back pattern.
  • March around the outside of the hoop clockwise.
  • March around the outside of the hoop counterclockwise.
  • Vary movement around the hoop (gallop, skip slide, tiptoe, skate, fast feet, etc.).

You can add a "change hoops" signal w/locomotor pattern to a new hoop.
