Activity Grade Level
Carpet Rides K - 3
Equipment Needs
  • One square piece of carpet for each student.
Facility/Playground Needs On any surface where carpet squares can slide.
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive):

Improve strength and fitness.

Associate exercise with fun

Teaching Hints:

The value of using carpet squares is to ensure that students are working in their own self-spaces.

Teachers must plan a variety of locomotor and nonlocomotor activities.

Description:

There are many things you can do with a carpet square. Students can put the carpet square on the floor, soft part down, and lie their stomachs on the carpet. They can pull themselves forward with their hands or push with their feet and spin in circles. They can also lie with their backs on the carpet, sit, kneel, and stand while doing a range of locomotor and nonlocomotor activities.

These activities can be done at different speeds and with music to help motivate students.

Alternatives/Modifications

If older students are strong enough they can drive the carpet.

Some athletic teams use driving as part of their leg work out.

Other students put their hands on the carpet and lift their hips.
