Run Around With Center Activities K - 3
Equipment Needs
  • Hula-Hoops
  • Cones
  • Prompt cards
  • Whistle
Facility/Playground Needs Inside or Outside.
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive):

Improve cardiovasculare fitness.

Learn to stretch.

Students don't have to perform all skills perfectly, but they must keep moving.

Teaching Hints:

If you don't have cones you can use anything that will stay stationary to mark the corners of the exercise area.

Even though students are moving in the same direction, some may move faster than others. Consequently if you need more space for students to move, add another square.

To add variety, always have a number of different locomotor activity cards ready for introduction.

Description:

This activity is a variation to Run Around.

The class is split into two groups.

One group performs stretches and other nonlocomotor movements in hula-hoops in the middle of the square.

The second group completes locomotor activities around the square with the addition that they change direction and freeze when the teacher blows the whistle.

After a set time period, number of laps, or piece of music, the two groups switch.

Alternatives/Modifications

If older students are strong enough they can drive the carpet.

Some athletic teams use driving as part of their leg work out.

Other students put their hands on the carpet and lift their hips.
