Take heart rate checks before and after the workout.

Emphasize quality of movement.

Make use of chart paper to list cues in the sequence.

Description:

In this routine, everyone begins at the same place and then moves together in a square pattern keeping time to the music. Have participants walk through the square pattern first, then increase the tempo.

  1. Walking-the-Square Pattern: Begin in your own space. Walk 4 steps forward, then turn right; walk 4 steps forward, turn right; walk another 4 steps forward, turn right again; and walk 4 steps forward to your starting place. Make your right turns crisp and let your eyes immediately focus in the new directions. Repeat, turning to the left each time.
  2. Repeat the square pattern, moving with a skipping step, a sliding step, facing inward, then facing outward.
  3. Running-the-Square Sequence: (Everyone begins at the same place.) Run forward 8 counts, then quickly turn right, run forward another 8 counts, turn right again. Continue until back to starting place. “CLAP” and drop your hands straight down by your sides on the first count of each set of 8.
  4. Repeat Running-the-Square Sequence until the music stops.
