Lily Pad Hopping K - 3
Equipment Needs
  • Hula-Hoops
Facility/Playground Needs Inside or Outside.
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive):

Improve fitness, leg strength.

Learn to work with others and share space.

Associate exercise with fun

Teaching Hints:

Be aware of students stepping on hoops and thus twisting their ankles.

Make sure hoops are placed a reasonable distance apart.

Make sure students know that this is not a competition, there are no winners, and it's just for fun.

Description:

Hoops are scattered over the playing area. They represent lily pads. Some are spaced far apart while others are close.

The objective of the game is for students to jump from one lily pad to the next.

If the student can't jump the distance and don't land on a pad when they jump, they must swim to the nearest lily pad.

Students can get creative with their swimming by using different arm movements.

Students should be encouraged to work with others and share lily pads.

Alternatives/Modifications

There can be different sized hoops for students to jump into to increase the challenge.

Students should also be challenged to carry something without dropping it. A water balloon, and egg on a spoon, a cup of water are a few options.
