The holidays are a great time to have fun with your class. It is a time to take a break from the curriculum and celebrate. Sometimes we have parties that run too long and we wish that we could go outside with the kids and do an activity that relates to the holiday. Here are some games to play that are tied into a holiday theme.

PPEP-PALS Lesson Sharing
Teacher & School: Cheryl Ripoll, Roseland
Activity Grade Level
Snow Tag K - 2
Equipment Needs 2 blue foam balls, 2 yellow foam balls and cones to mark off space.
Facility/Playground Needs Gym / Blacktop
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive):

Having fun with a game and linking it to the holiday theme.

Teaching Hints:

Remind children how to tag with soft hands and to watch boundaries.

Description:

The teacher selects 2 students to hold blue foam balls, which will represent "snowflakes" and 2 students to hold two yellow balls which will represent the "sunshine." The with the blue foam balls are the taggers and the students with the yellow foam balls are "unfreezers." On the whistle, the teacher calls out a locomotor skill, (for example: skip, gallop, hop, jump, or side step) for the students to perform. The students who have the blue foam balls try to tag the others. When tagged, the student must stand with their hands out to their sides (fingers spread) like a snowman. It's the job of the students who have the yellow foam balls to unfreeze or "melt" the students who are frozen. The only students that cannot get tagged are the ones with the yellow foam balls. Rotate "snowflakes" and the "sunshine" often.

Alternatives/Modifications

Start with walking, then switching to skipping, gliding, or running.
