  • 8 cones
Facility/Playground Needs blacktop area, multi-purpose room or grass field
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive):

To reinforce dribbling/trapping skills in soccer and some goalkeeping skills.

Teaching Hints: If two balls hit a cone simultaneously, the kickers decide who switches by doing rock-paper-scissors.
Description:

  1. Cones are spaced along the perimeter of the playing area. The cones are the ghosts. Each cone has a ghost keeper (goalie)
  2. Students foot dribble the ball randomly throughout the playing area and try to hit the cone with the ball. The ball should be kicked low and with the inside/outside of the foot (more or a pass). The students object is to hit the cone with the soccer ball.
  3. Dribblers should be encouraged to fake the ghost keeper as a way to gain advantage. After one shot at the cone, the dribbler moves on to another cone.
  4. Ghost keepers try to keep the cone from bieing hit by keeping their body between the ball and the cone. If the cone is hit the keeper and dribbler switch places.

Alternatives / Modifications

Introduction to the skills of foot dribbling, kicking for accuracy and goal keeping may be needed ahead of time.

Assess the quality of the kicks at the cones. Are the students kicking wildy or making a conscious effort to knock the cones down?

Assess the goal keeping by how well the ghost keepers keep their body between the ball and the cone.

Maybe draw a circle around the cone so the goalie isn’t too close to the cone.
