One scarf for each student |
| Facility/Playground Needs |
Outdoor or Indoor facility |
| Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive): |
Students will be able to demonstrate appropriate foot placement and arm motion without striking an object. |
| Teaching Hints: |
Teachers should check for proper foot and arm motion during the activity and comment on specific students that are participating as instructed. |
| Description: |
- Before passing out the scarves, ask the children to raise their hands if they know of or have participated in any activity or sport that requires hitting an object with another object or his/her hand. Have the children share their experience and knowledge. Explain to them that they will learn the correct striking techniques needed to hit an object with their hand or another object.
- Demonstrate the striking motion (shoulder back, body facing forward, hand behind the ear, step with the opposite foot as you swing forward and follow through toward the target with the hand). You can also teach the side, underhand, and back swing at another time.
- Give each student a scarf and allow them time to explore and practice swinging the scarf as if they were going to throw it, while you roam the room and encourage and correct the students' efforts.
- Regroup and allow students the chance to demonstrate the correct striking techniques with their classmates.
|
| Alternatives/Modifications |
- Pair students up and allow them to throw the scarves back and forth to a friend.
- Pair students up and have them take turns coaching and encouraging the other.
