Activity Grade Level
Swinging motion using balloons or balls K
Equipment Needs Balloons or foam balls
Facility/Playground Needs Indoor facility with cones marking the boundaries for all participants. Large Rectangles works best.
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive):
  1. Students will demonstrate the correct striking motion while elevating their heartRate and developing endurance.
  2. Students will move safely and under control throughout the designated area among their classmates.
Teaching Hints: Students should have a prior lesson on the correct striking skills.Teachers should check for proper foot and arm motion during the activity and comment on specific students that are participating as instructed.
Description:
  1. Before beginning the activity demonstrate the correct striking motion (i.e. step with the opposite foot as you swing forward and follow through toward the target with the hand). Demonstrate the technique for the overhead, side, underhand, and back swing.
  2. Place a line or rope that divides the bordered rectangle into two equal areas ( two backyards). Divide the students into two equal groups. Using foam balls or balloons, students are to keep their backyards clean by striking the balls or balloons out of their yard, into the yard of the other group. Students are cautioned not to cross the line and to allow teachers to retrieve any balls that leave the area. Start with an equal number of balls on each side or one ball for each student. Students continue to strike the balls over the line until a stop signal is given. At the end of each round, return equal number of balls to each side. Play for 2-3 minutes, recognizing those who are demonstrating the correct striking technique. No scoring is needed.
  3. Return balls or balloons to barrels or bags.
  4. Regroup and allow students the chance to demonstrate the correct striking techniques with their classmates.
