PPEP-PALS Lesson Sharing
Teacher & School: Suzy Charles, Jefferson Elementary
Activity Grade Level
Rolling ball to wall and striking the rebound ball K
Equipment Needs One ball for each student
Facility/Playground Needs Any indoor or outdoor wall
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive): Students will be able to demonstrate appropriate foot placement and arm Motion while striking an object.
Teaching Hints: Teachers should check for proper foot and arm motion during the activity and comment on specific students that are participating as instructed.
Description:
  1. Before passing out the balls, ask the children to raise their hands if they know of or have participated in any activity or sport that requires hitting an object with another object or his/her hand. Have the children share their experience and knowledge. Explain to them that they will learn the correct striking techniques needed to hit an object with their hand or another object.
  2. Demonstrate the striking motion (shoulder back, body facing forward, hand behind the ear, step with the opposite foot as you swing forward and follow through toward the target with the hand). You can also teach the side, underhand, and back swing at another time.
  3. Give each student a ball and allow time for them to explore and manipulate the ball.
  4. Regroup and spread the students out facing a wall. While standing, students will roll the ball toward the wall hard enough for the ball to rebound back to them. The student will use the correct striking technique to strike it back to the wall. If the ball goes off course, the student will retrieve it and start again.
  5. Ask the students to count how many times they can strike the ball without causing it to go off course.
  6. Regroup and allow students the chance to demonstrate the correct striking techniques with their classmates.
Alternatives/Modifications
  1. Pair students up and allow them take turns bouncing the ball to their partner who will strike the ball back to them.
  2. Use the Four Square court and practice the striking techniques with four students at a time.
  3. Pair students up and have them take turns coaching and encouraging the other.
