| Facility/Playground Needs |
Outdoor or Indoor facility |
| Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive): |
- Students will be able to demonstrate appropriate and safe technique when gripping and carrying a long handled striking tool.
- Students will show correct hand placement when holding the soft paddle.
- Students will move safely and under control throughout the designated area among their classmates.
|
| Teaching Hints: |
Teachers should check for proper hand placement on the handle during the activity, and comment on specific students that are participating as instructed. |
| Description: |
- Students should line up side by side facing teacher, leaving safety space between themselves and others. This spot will be their home base.
- Have the students get a paddle and return to their home base. Allow time for them to explore the new material. Do the same with the fluffy ball.
- Demonstrate how to hold the paddle correctly. (Four fingers on bottom, thumb wrapped around the top of the handle)
- With this grip, have students rotate the paddle so the palm is facing up and the paddle is parallel to the ceiling or sky.
- Students will place the ball on top of the paddle and balance the ball.
- On a "go" signal have the students walk down to a target spot and back to their home base while balancing the ball on the paddle.
- Once this skill is mastered, mix it up by having the students move the paddle in a vertical motion in front of their body, walking fast, moving in a crouched position, moving like an animal, etc..
- Regroup and allow students the chance to demonstrate what they can do.
