Teacher & School: Suzy Charles, Jefferson Elementary
Activity Grade Level
Small Group, round robin striking practice 1
Equipment Needs One bouncy 9"or 12" rubber ball per 5-6 students.
Facility/Playground Needs Outdoor or Indoor facility
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive): Students will be able to demonstrate appropriate foot placement and arm motion when striking a ball towards a target.
Teaching Hints: Teachers should check for proper foot and arm motion during the activity and comment on specific students that are participating as instructed.
Description:
  1. Demonstrate appropriate striking skills or choose a student to do so (shoulder back, body facing , step with the opposite foot as you swing forward and follow through toward the target with the hand).
  2. Divide the students into groups of 5 or 6.
  3. Students will form a semi-circle around one member of their team. The students should be a safe distance away from each other for them to safely strike the ball.
  4. The student in the middle will start the activity by striking the ball to the first student in the semi-circle, that student will strike the ball back to the middle student. Without catching the ball the middle student will strike the ball to the second student in the semi -circle. This will continue until the ball is stuck to the last student. The students will rotate and begin again. Encourage arm follow through towards the target and stepping with the opposite foot.
  5. Regroup and allow students the chance to demonstrate the correct striking techniques with their classmates.
Alternatives/Modifications If striking the ball to the target is too difficult for some students, allow them to catch the ball before striking it back, or allow them to use two hands to strike the ball.
