Aerobic exercise and cooperation

Teaching Hints:

Change tag games frequently during the PE period (every few minutes), so any one variation doesn’t become boring. Blow your whistle, and all children should come running. Have them help you count, "5,4,3,2,1" and everyone should be there by the time you reach zero.

Emphasize safety and fun - it’s no fun to get hurt.

Description:

Hug Tag: Play begins with everyone standing by him or herself. Two players have a soft object: fluffball, stuffed animal, scarf, etc. to use for tagging. The teacher calls out “3s”. Everyone must get into groups of 3’s before the taggers can catch a player and tag her or him. If a player gets tagged they become “it”. The teacher may call 4’s, 2’s, 5’s, etc. The new "it" players have the objects.

Bronco Tag: Teams of 5 or 6 are designated. The teams are spread out around the court, with each team in a line. The first player steps out and faces his or her line. The line is one player behind another, hooked on with each player having hands on hips of player in front. The last player may have a flag sticking out of his/her pocket. The object for the team is to protect the last player, by staying hooked up but moving around so that the free player cannot grab the flag.

People to People: Players form a circle, then pair off into twos. An uneven group of players is needed. The referee can decide whether or not s/he needs to play. The center person, not paired up, yells out, “Elbow to Elbow”, “Head to Shoulder”, “Hand to Hand”, “Hand to Head”, “Toe to Toe”. At any given time, s/he yells “People to People”. Everyone scrambles for a new partner. The odd person becomes the caller. The game continues.

Alternatives / Modifications

Bronco Tag Variation 1: Team hook-on flag - The whole team is hooked up, only the end player has the flag. Teams try to collect as many flags from the other teams as possible.

Bronco Tag Variation 2: Circle hook-on tag - All players except one are holding hands in small circle. One circle player has a flag in his/her pocket. Loose layer attempts to get flag.
