Equipment Needs

Cones, Hoops, Bowling Pins, Jump Ropes; Hockey Sticks; Pucks; Hockey Goals (or Mats); Goalie protective gear; playground or other types of balls, poly spots(Basically - hockey equipment and a variety of other equipment to choose from)Paper and pencils, clipboards

Facility/Playground Needs This activity works best indoors (gymnasium) but can also be played on a blacktop surface with appropriate boundaries.
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive):

  1. Students will demonstrate floor hockey skills - passing, trapping, shooting, goal keeping, dribbling, and defensive strategy during various station activities.
  2. Students will show understanding of cues and basic vocabulary associated with floor hockey.
  3. Students will work cooperatively during the activities, show support for and patience with classmates, and take turns as needed.
  4. Students will follow directions and stay on task without the direct supervision of the instructor.
  5. Students will collaborate and show listening skills when working in a group.
  6. Students will show creativity and the ability to demonstrate their ideas in front of their peers.
Teaching Hints:
  • Review basic skills before starting the activity.
  • Stop as needed to give special hints/reminders/discuss concerns.
  • Be sure there is safe space available to handle all of the activities without too much interference with each other during the lesson.
  • Allow time for students to create and practice their ideas before presentingto the class.
Description:

Students will form groups of 3 or more to create their own hockey game using the equipment available. A worksheet should be made available where they can answer questions to better organize their thoughts into a game that they will explain and demonstrate to the class.

  • Object - What is the object of the game? What are you trying to do?
  • Equipment - What do you need to play the game? How many of each piece of equipment?
  • Set up - How do you set up the game? Students can draw a diagram.
  • Play - Explain how to play the game or complete the activity?
  • Skills - What hockey skills were used? - Passing, Trapping, Shooting, Dribbling, Goal Keeping, Etc.
  • Players - Are there teams? Do you play as individuals?
  • Scoring - Do players score? How do you score? How many points are awarded?
  • Safety - What things will make the game safe to play?

When students seem ready, have groups prepare, explain, and demonstrate their game to the class. Let groups answer any questions that classmates may have - they are the "experts" (Later, groups can decide which games they would like to play in class)

At end of lesson, discuss the stations and review techniques. Point out any positive actions observed

Alternatives/Modifications

  • This lesson may take more than one day, allow extra time if needed
  • Play one or more of the games/activities as a class
  • Take photos or have students turn it into a project where they can draw the game on a poster and explain it for display purposes.
