Teacher & School: Lisa A. Fogg, Cloverdale Washington
Activity Grade Level
Floor Hockey - Barker's Hoopla 4
Equipment Needs

8 hula hoops

For each student:

  • One hockey stick
  • Minimum of one puck
Facility/Playground Needs Gymnasium or blacktop surface (indoor facility is best); Mark boundaries
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive):

  1. Students will demonstrate appropriate and safe technique when gripping and carrying the hockey stick.
  2. Students will show correct hand placement (dominant hand near blade) when holding and using the hockey stick.
  3. Students will move safely and under control throughout the designated area among their classmates while dribbling the puck.
  4. Students will work cooperatively and demonstrate the ability to follow directions throughout the activity.
  5. Students will start and stop on signal.
  6. Students will collaborate and develop a strategy during a modified hockey game situation.
Teaching Hints:
  • Caution students to move under control.
  • Be sure that students are safely moving about the area with the blade on the floor.
  • Teacher should check for proper techniques on holding the stick andcomment on specific students that are participating as instructed.
  • Review procedures for playing the game and modify them as needed.
Description:
  1. Review with students specific techniques for carrying and gripping the stick. Refer to parts of the stick as needed (Blade, Shaft, and Butt). Remind students about keeping the blade on or near the floor.
  2. Review hand placement (hands apart and dominant hand near blade). Review dribbling and ragging techniques and cues (short taps; head up/move under control).
  3. Hoops are placed around the perimeter with one puck per student inside, or a designated number inside (five or six pucks per hoop). Students are divided equally and each group stands near their home base hula hoop.
  4. Object: to collect pucks from the other hoops and bring them back to your own. (At times, the object will be to collect THE MOST; other times it can be THE SAME NUMBER YOU STARTED WITH; or a SPECIFIC COLOR (if a variety of colored pucks are used).
  5. On signal players move to other hoops (except the two that are closest) and retrieve one of the other team's pucks, and dribble it back to their own hoop. Players continue to collect ONE AT A TIME and may not steal a puck from another player. (All pucks must be taken from another hoop, not from a player.) Play continues for a few minutes. On signal, all return to their home base hoop.
  6. Teams count pucks. Discuss strategy. Play again using different objective.
Alternatives/Modifications

  • Students can take turns - with one teammate going at a time.
  • A massive amount of pucks can be used and the game can begin with all pucks in the center. Students retrieve them first, and then go visit other hoops.
  • Circles can be taped instead of using hoops.
  • Players can try to use non-dominant hands.
  • Teacher can add exercises and stretches between rounds.
