Equipment Needs
  • Cones and/or station markers
  • Hockey Goals (or Mats)
  • One goalie stick per goal
  • Pucks
  • Goalie protective gear

For each student:

Facility/Playground Needs This activity works best indoors (gymnasium) but can also be played on a blacktop surface with appropriate boundaries.
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive):

  1. Students will demonstrate floor hockey skills - passing, trapping, shooting, goal keeping, dribbling, and defensive strategy during various station activities.
  2. Students will show understanding of cues and basic vocabulary associatedwith floor hockey.
  3. Students will work cooperatively during the activities, show support forand patience with classmates, and take turns as needed.
  4. Students will follow directions and stay on task without the direct supervisionof the instructor.
Teaching Hints:
  • Review basic skills and demonstrate each station before starting the activity.
  • Stop as needed to give special hints/reminders/discuss concerns.
  • When setting up stations, be sure there is safe space available to handle allof the activities without too much interference with each other during the lesson.
Description:

Set out the five stations with necessary equipment. 6 students should be at each station - 30 student total

Station 1 - Keep Away - 5 of one color stick; 1 different color stick; one puck - Students form a circle around the one player with the different colored stick and pass the puck by him/her. If the puck is stopped, change positions. Students can also agree to rotate after a time limit (say 30 seconds).

Station 2 - Dribble - Set out a line of cones, various distances apart; 6 sticks; 6 pucks - Students use their own puck and stick and dribble down, through the cones (or other obstacles). Teacher can set up a goal for them to shoot into at one end - Dribble down, Shoot on the way back. Dribble only in 1 direction; Students should space themselves out.

Station 3 - 2 on 2; 1 on 1 Games - Set out two goals and have an end line marker about 10-15 feet back; 3 of one color stick, three of the other color stick; two pucks - students divide into teams 2 on 2 and 1 on 1. One game should be played with one goal, the other game uses the other goal. Basically, teams try to score into their goal by dribbling, passing, and shooting with a partner. After a shot, or when possession changes, the players must bring the puck back out away from the goal to the 10-15 foot line to start again. If space allows, students may want to organize a 3 on 3 game using both goals.

Station 4 - Passing and Trapping - 6 sticks; 3 pucks, cones mark the passing area - Students are roughly 10-15 feet apart and pass and trap the puck with a partner. Be sure that all three groups are passing and trapping in the same direction and that they are not interfering with the other stations.

Station 5 - Shots on Goal- Two Goals and goalie sticks and any protective gear; 4 regular hockey sticks; 4 pucks; cones/object to mark shot distance - Students are to take shots on goal and rotate jobs. Have a line about 10-20 feet away from the goal to mark the shooting distance. Caution students to take safe shots and be sure that the goalie is prepared before they hit the puck. Remind goalies of the correct technique for holding their stick (backwards) and to slide their blade from side to side in an attempt to stop the puck.

Students form groups of 6. Teacher explains and demonstrates stations. Procedures for play, stopping, organizing equipment, and rotating should be reviewed. Allow 5 or more minutes at each station, enough time to give all a chance at rotations.

At end of lesson, discuss the stations and review techniques. Point out any positive actions observed

Alternatives/Modifications

  • Add other stations for exercises or fitness development- Use music to signal start and stop
  • If you have a variety of colored pucks, use a different color for each station for easy equipment identification.
