Equipment Needs

Facility/Playground Needs Outdoor tossing area (blacktop or field)
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive):

Students will practice tossing and catching (Developmental Level I Skills).

Teaching Hints:

Teachers may want to use a special blindfold.

Description:

Divide the class into small circles of 5 to 7 players.

One player, with hands over the eyes, stands in the center of each circle.

A ball is tossed clockwise or counter-clockwise from player to player around the circle.

Failing to catch the ball or making a bad toss incurs a penalty. That player must take one long step back and stay out of the game for one turn.

At a time of his/her own selection, the center player calls, Stop. The player caught with the ball (or the ball coming to her) steps back and stays out for one turn.

The center player should be allowed three or four turns and then be changed.

Alternatives/Modifications

The distance between students (the size of the circle) can vary depending on the students' capabilities.

This can be played in the classroom using a softer ball or a "Koosh" ball
