Activity Grade Level
Club Guard 1 - 6
Equipment Needs
  • A juggling club or bowling pin.
  • A foam rubber ball.
Facility/Playground Needs Blacktop area
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive):

Students will practice throwing (Developmental Level II Skills).

Teaching Hints:

Remind students to aim at club, or pin, and not at the guards.

Description:

A circle about 15 feet in diameter is drawn.

Inside the circle at the center, an 18-inch circle is drawn.

The club is put in the center of the small circle.

Two or three players (guards) guard the club.

The other players (circle players) stand outside the large circle, which is the restraining line for them.

The circle players throw the ball at the club (or bowling pin) and try to knock it down.

The guards try to block the throws with the legs and body but must stay out of the small inner circle.

The outer circle players pass the ball around rapidly so that one of the players can get an opening to throw as the guards maneuver to protect the club.

Rotate in new guards after a short period of time (15-20 seconds).

The guards are disqualified if they step into the small circle.

Alternatives/Modifications

More than one club, or bowling pin, can be placed in the center.
