Dribble Challenges K - 2
Equipment Needs 1 ball / student, 4 cones for boundaries
Facility/Playground Needs Blacktop
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive):

The purpose of this lesson is to develop eye-hand coordination and ball manipulation used in such games as basketball.

Teaching Hints: Do each activity 20 seconds to one minute. When dribbling, students should have spread fingers as they push the ball down gently, do not slap. Control with the finger pads. Students should try to keep their heads up and not look at the ball.
Description:

The following skills can be taught over 2-3 days as the students' skills progress, but each day revisit the already practiced skills.

  • Students begin by dribbling the ball waist high using both hands.
  • Try using their best hand; switch to other hand.
  • Try dribbling knee high. How high can they dribble while still keeping control? How low?
  • Try dribbling while standing, then bend down to one knee and back to standing position.
  • Dribble 20 times in the same spot. Repeat using best hand. Repeat using other hand.
  • Try dribbling, then lifting your leg over the ball and continue dribbling. Try other hand and leg.
  • Try dribbling from hand to hand. (It will create a "V" shape in front of you. Deflect the ball at a 45-degree angle. Hit the same spot.)
  • Dribble in the same spot while walking in a circle. Repeat using best hand. Repeat using other hand while walking in the opposite direction.
Alternatives/Modifications
  • Students try with their eyes closed to encourage not looking at the ball.
  • Also try high and low levels of dribbling.
