Quick Dribble Relay K - 2
Equipment Needs

For each team of 3 - 4 students:

  • 3 balls
  • 3 hoops
  • 1 cone
Facility/Playground Needs Blacktop (preferably a basketball court)
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive):

The purpose of this lesson is to develop the skill of dribbling as used in such games as basketball.

Teaching Hints:
  • Keep teams small (3-4 students) to reduce wait time.
  • When dribbling, students should have spread fingers as they push the ball down gently, do not slap.
  • Control with the finger pads.
  • Students should try to dribble low to the ground and keep their head up.
Description:

Teams of three or four are lined up at least six feet from the other teams. All teams would be lined up on the same line and facing the same direction.

Use 3 balls and 3 hoops for each team. Have the teams line up along the baseline of a basketball court. Place a cone directly across from each team at half court. Space the three hoops out between player #1 on each team and the cone. Place one ball in each hoop.

Player #1 runs to the first hoop, picks up the ball, and dribbles it with one hand to the next hoop. They put the ball in that hoop and take the second ball and dribble to the third hoop. Put the ball in the hoop. Pick up the third ball and dribble around the cone and back to the first hoop. Place the ball in the first hoop and run to tag the next player.

Continue through all players.

Alternatives/Modifications
  • Try high and low levels of dribbling.
  • Switch hands each round.
  • Increase to full basketball court.
