Stepping Towards Movement

Using Pedometers in Physical Education

  1. The Value of Using Pedometers
    1. Increases the motivation to move.
    2. Provides immediate feedback to students.
    3. Provides daily student assessment data for teachers on activity level and effort.
    4. Teaches the students to monitor and be responsible for their own activity.
    5. Lesson focus becomes multi-dimensional.
    6. Integrates technology into Physical Education.

2.      Lesson Ideas

a.       Tag game comparisons. (Partner tag versus group tag)

Partner tag

Students pair up and designate who will be IT by ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS. Have the IT person close their eyes and count to 10.

They will walk, run, skip, or gallop (you decide) to tag their partner.

When tagged the partner counts to 10 and tries to tag their partner.

Group tag

Designate about 4 students to be IT for about 30 seconds with a fleece ball. When they tag someone they give them the ball and transfer their

“Itness”. No tag backs allowed.

Have the students compare the number of steps they had in the two games.

Make sure each game was about the same length of time. Ask the students

in which game they had more steps.

b.       Super 6 Fitness Stations With Pedometers

Purpose of Activity: To enhance fitness through the use of stations, working with one another, and technology.

Materials needed: Cones, station identifiers, and pedometers

Set up the Super 6 Stations around the gym or blacktop.

Jogging, crunches, jumping jacks, side jumps, push ups, and jump rope.

Divide your class into six equal groups of 3 to 5 students each. Have the

students put on their pedometer. Before the first station begins, have the

students reset their pedometers. Use some cool music for when they are

to be moving. When the music stops they rotate to the next station. After

the completion of the Super 6 Stations have the students record their steps.
