Objectives

PPEP-PALS seeks to improve the quality of physical education programs in Petaluma elementary schools and:

  1. Support elementary school teachers who will serve as leaders in the development of physical education programs that emphasize fitness education and assessment techniques to improve the health of all students.
  2. Assist schools in developing a district-wide physical education curriculum plan that reflects the vision of the CA Physical Education Framework and Model Content Standards emphasizing fitness and nutrition education, motor skill development, and personal and social responsibility.
  3. Train teachers in specific professional practices that result in the integration of students with disabilities in physical education programs including individuals with asthma and diabetes.
  4. Collaborate with Health Service Programs, e.g. Sonoma County Department of Health Services-Prevention and Planning Division (SCDHS-PPD), to provide a nutrition education program that emphasizes healthy eating and moderate to vigorous activity for all children.
  5. Support existing school and community networks, e.g. Petaluma City Schools (PCS) Food Services and Support Healthy Active Kids in Education (SHAKE), that promote children's health and physical well-being and support district-wide wellness policies.
  6. Enable children to understand the value of healthy lifestyles by teaching the fitness concepts and knowledge to support regular physical activity and heart healthy nutrition. Improve the health status of Latino children by emphasizing healthy eating and physical activity/fitness.
