To Apply for Reading and Language Programs

  • You must complete two separate applications. Apply concurrently to both the University and the Reading and Language programs of your choice.

  • University applications are available at the SSU Office of Admissions and Records or online (click on link at bottom of this page).

  • Reading and Language program applications and forms are available in the School of Education Office at 1078 Stevenson Hall (Tel: 707-664-3115).
    Or, you can print application and forms directly by clicking on links at bottom of this page.  Note that there are three forms that must be submitted with the program application.

  • You may apply on the same application form to one program or a combination of the three Reading and Language programs listed below:
    Reading Certificate
    Reading and Language Arts Specialist Credential
    M.A. in Education: Reading and Language Education

  • Acceptance into the Reading and Language graduate programs is dependent on your acceptance to the University.

  • Scholarships are available to SSU graduate students.

Application Process

Please submit the following materials to

1. A completed Reading and Language Program application (click on link below).

2. A Statement of Purpose (click on link below) that includes a reflection on your teaching experiences, your professional perspectives, and your vision of how graduate study will contribute to your professional goals.  Your response will be evaluated on the organization and clarity of your ideas and the appropriate use of written English language conventions.

3. A completed Fieldwork Background (click on link below) documenting the range of your experiences in teaching reading.
NOTE: 
At the time of completion of the Reading Certificate and/or the R/LA Specialist Credential (but not the M.A.), you must provide verification of a minimum of three years of teaching experience.  You may enter these state licensure programs with less experience, but you must have completed three years by the time you submit your application to the state.

4. Official transcripts from each college or university you have attended:

  • For the MA degree, submit one set of transcripts.

  • For the Reading Certificate and the R/LA Specialist Credential, submit two sets.
    [Grade-point average requirements: cumulative upper division/graduate 3.0; Education 3.0]

5. A copy of your valid California Teaching Credential.
Individuals who are pursuing literacy education opportunities outside the public school setting may petition to waive this requirement. Confer with the program advisor.

6. Two recent letters of reference that address your qualifications as a professional educator and the likelihood of your success in advanced academic coursework.
