Masters Degree in Reading and Language
30 - 36 Units

The Reading and Language Master's Degree may be taken concurrently with the Reading Certificate and Reading/Language Arts Specialist Credential.

 

Why Pursue This Master's Degree?

  • The Master of Arts is an academic degree, representing advanced knowledge and competence in your field.  Our Master’s Degree candidates become experts in reading and writing for first and second language learners.

  • Candidates prepare for leadership roles in literacy education and develop a solid academic foundation for further study and research.

  • Many of our graduates assume important positions in their schools and districts. Some candidates prepare for National Board Certification or teaching positions in two-year community colleges. Others pursue doctoral degrees at major universities.

  • Our graduates contribute knowledge and service in reading and writing at all levels.

Reading/Language Core

EDRL 507 Research in Language and Literacy (3 units)
EDRL 521A Language Development in First and Second Languages (3 units)
EDRL 522 Assessment & Teaching in Reading (3 units)

Electives (usually EDRL courses)

Elective courses (9 units) may include Reading Certificate coursework

Education Core (EDUC courses)

EDUC 570 Reflective Educator (3 units)
EDUC 571 Research Paradigms in Education (3 units)
 

Select a Masters Degree Culminating Path

• Thesis (6 units)
• Individualized exam (9 units)
• Cognate – may include Specialist Credential coursework (12 units )

Candidates observe University criteria for successful progress through their program. You must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in program coursework with no course below a grade of "C".  Masters Degrees require a minimum of 30 units.  Two-thirds of the units must be letter-graded. A minimum of 21 units should be done in residence, with a maximum of 30% of coursework allowed in transfer.
