Program Components

Students may select Reading and Language Education courses as a component of their graduate program.   It is helpful, but not required, to complete a basic course in teaching reading prior to enrolling in graduate Reading and Language coursework.

Cognate Path for any Masters Degree in Education

  • In consultation with a faculty advisor, students from any Education M.A. degree program may select three courses in Reading and Language as their Cognate path.

  • Master's degree candidates who concurrently pursue a Reading and Language Arts Specialist Credential often select a Cognate path in Reading and Language.

  • Please refer to the Cognate Guide (pdf) for MA Candidates in Reading/Language Education for detailed information about designing and presenting your Cognate Project.

Area of Emphasis

  • In consultation with a faculty advisor, students in the Curriculum, Teaching and Learning M.A. concentration may design an Area of Emphasis comprised of four courses in Reading and Language.

Electives

  • In consultation with a faculty advisor, students from any Education M.A. degree may select courses in Reading and Language as electives.

Grad CLAD

  • In consultation with the Grad CLAD advisor, credentialed teachers who wish to pursue state certification in Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development (CLAD) at SSU may enroll in three of the four state-approved CLAD courses in Reading and Language.
