Reading and Language Arts Specialist Credential
Tier 2  (15 Units)

 

The Reading / Language Arts Specialist Credential program builds on knowledge and practice gained through the Reading Certificate program. Candidates deepen their understanding of literacy development for diverse groups of students through continued fieldwork with students and colleagues. They hone skills in using assessment findings for curricular planning and expand leadership roles through policy analysis and supervisory responsibility.

NOTE:   You must verify three years of full-time teaching experience in order to apply for the Reading Certificate and/or the Reading/Language Arts Specialist Credential. You may begin the Reading/Language Arts Specialist Credential immediately after completing the Reading Certificate program.


What can you do with the
Reading
/ Language Arts Specialist Credential?

The California Credential licenses you to teach in specialized programs at the school level and to take leadership roles in Reading and Language Arts at the district level.

In your program you will learn to:

  • Create curriculum for beginning, struggling and proficient readers and writers and design assessment and instructional approaches to suit specific students' literacy profiles.

  • Teach reading and writing to English learners and culturally diverse students at all levels.

  • Evaluate and use current reading and language arts materials most effectively.

  • Provide staff development and inservice education and perform other leadership roles in literacy education.


Course Sequence

The 15 units of coursework in the Reading Certificate is foundational for the R/LA Specialist Credential and is included in the required 30 units.
Beyond the Reading Certificate, you will take the following courses:

Spring

EDRL 523 Curriculum Development for Literacy (3)
EDRL 529 Evaluation in Reading & Language Arts Programs (3)

Summer

EDRL 527B Advanced Clinical Field Experience (3)

Fall

EDRL 507 Research in Language and Literacy (3)
EDRL 525 Leadership & Policy in Literacy Programs (3)

Criteria for Successful Progress

Candidates observe University criteria for successful progress through their program.   You must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in program coursework with no course below a grade of "C".  All courses must be letter-graded, and a maximum of one course (20% of program coursework) may be allowed in transfer.
