Chamber Singers Swing with "Motets, Madrigals and All That Jazz" this Friday

Sonoma State University's new choral director Jenny Bent is shaking it up with her first concert of the year, featuring the SSU Chamber Singers in a program entitled Motets, Madrigals and All That Jazz, taking place this Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Holy Family Church in Rohnert Park, 1500 E. Cotati Ave.

And how, one might ask, do motets and madrigals - songs typically associated with the Renaissance era - relate to Jazz? The answer is simple: the Doo-Wop Madrigal project by veteran choral arranger Gregg Smith, which takes standard madrigals and gives them new life through jazz interpretations. Listeners will thus hear "April Is In My Mistress' Face" in its original version by Orlando di Lasso, and the Gregg Smith Singers arrangement entitled "Cool April." Other pairings include "Matona mia cara/ Hey, Babe!" and "Il est bel et bon/He's Awesome."

Rounding out the concert will be sacred works by Georg Philip Telemann and Maurice Duruflé, and a spiritual, "Hush! Somebody's Callin My Name."

Tickets are available from the box office at 707-664-2353 as well as online at http://www.sonoma.edu/music. Tickets are $12 general, $10 SSU faculty, alumni and staff and $8 seniors; Free to students of all ages with ID.
