2015 - 2016 Season

Michael Blake Quartet
SSU Contemporary Jazz Ensemble & Jazz Orchestra
Wednesday, March 9, 7:30 pm
Weill Hall

Saxophonist and composer Michael Blake makes music that bristles with originality and vision. Known for his robust tone on tenor and pure soprano sound, Michael is frequently touted by critics as one the most original saxophonists of his generation. His latest CD Tiddy Boom (Sunnyside), a hard swinging homage to tenor titans Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young continues a legacy of rave reviews. As recipient of Chamber Music America's New Jazz Works Grant, Blake’s creative output is constantly in flux, shifting in approach and empathetic for each new program he designs.

Blake’s quartet features pianist Frank Kimbrough and bassist Ben Allison —founding members of New York City’s Jazz Composers Collective— and Rudy Royston, Denver native and Ron Miles protégé, on drums. The opening set will feature SSU’s Contemporary Jazz Ensemble, coached by Kasey Knudsen, and the SSU Jazz Orchestra, led by Doug Leibinger.
