What I Do at SSU
I presently serve on the vocal faculty at Sonoma State University, where I teach voice lessons and the weekly Vocal Repertoire Class.
David Burnakus began his musical studies at Point Loma College where in addition to voice, he studied conducting and piano. He was the music director for the First Baptist Church in San Diego as well as a full-time member of the San Diego Opera chorus. He attended Boston University where he received a M.M. in voice and performed with Boston Concert Opera. After being invited to the Music Academy of the West, he began vocal studies with Martial Singher.
He performed several roles with the San Francisco Opera Center and Western Opera Theater as well as several bay area opera companies including Pocket Opera, Marin Opera and Pacific Opera Theater. It was during this period that he began a long association with his most influential teacher, Dickson Titus. While a 14 year member of the San Francisco Opera chorus he began and maintains a private vocal studio in the San Francisco bay area. Since 1998 he has traveled throughout the USA, Europe and Asia as coach and accompanist for his wife Ruth Ann Swenson. Most recently, he and Ms.Swenson have been invited to give joint Master classes at several Young Artists programs including the Astoria Music Festival, Le Chiavi an institute for Bel Canto at the University of Houston and the Palm Beach Opera.
