What I Do at SSU
I am primarily a vocalist of Hindustani classical music. Academically, I was trained in World Music (Ethnomusicology). I teach Survey of World Music courses and Music in Religion and Society. I also conduct an Indian Singing Ensemble. Basically, I add some spice to music to let the flavors from around the world enrich our understanding of music.
My Bio
A gold medalist and merit scholarship winner, I completed B.Mus./ M.Mus. and D.Mus programs at Banaras Hindu University before moving to Wesleyan University to teach Indian Music and to study Ethnomusicology. I earned a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology and joined Sonoma State University. I have been honored with an Outstanding Professor Award, a Meritorious Performance and Professional Achievement Award, and the Friends of the Library Faculty Award. I am a performer of Indian classical vocal music and teacher. I have collected the folk musics of India, Turkey, Trinidad, and Fiji and have produced numerous recordings and books based on my field research.
