"House Divided" (1859) Speech
Lincoln says the nation will not last if it is divided into two. For the nation to last, it must be united for or against slavery. He runs for president on a platform of anti-slavery.

- All men have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness
- If a government does not protect these rights, the people have the right to alter or abolish their government
In the Declaration of Independence, the founding fathers said that this new country was a United States, that the government was responsible to the people's wishes, and that all people were to be represented.
