Join Us Making Progress (JUMP) is hosting a campus-wide food drive from Nov.12-19 to
help support those who depend on the Redwood Empire's vital hunger relief services. The effort is part of JUMP's National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week activities.
Deadline for RSVPs for participation is Oct. 28.
In a campus-wide competition, JUMP will give various SSU clubs, organizations, and departments their own donation bins (or two, if needed) to collect food for those in need. Donation bins will be available on Friday, Nov. 12 and should be returned to the Harvest Room on Friday, Nov. 19 for easy pick up by the Food Bank. JUMP will deliver bins or pick them up once they're full.
The goal is to collect more than the 1800 pounds of food that was so generously donated by the SSU community last year, says Rachel Alexander, JUMP Coordinator for Redwood Empire Food Bank.
"Each club, organization, and/or department will be competing to see who can bring in the largest quantity of food. Last year Extended Education beat out a sorority for first place, with quite an impressive amount of food," she said.
A plaque and a pizza party will be awarded to the group with the largest donation.
Redwood Empire Food Bank depends on local food drives for a quarter of all their food and serves 70,000 people a month with assistance from food donors and volunteers.
