Andy Collinsworth: A Musical Leader

headshot_collinswortha.jpgAndy Collinsworth, professor of music, says his goal is to make SSU a leading center for music education in Northern California.

This year, he received the 2011 Byron Hoyt/Don Schmeer Band Educator Award honoring excellence in instrumental instruction and performance.

California Association for Music Education (CMEA) President Norm Dea says that Collinsworth was nominated by his peers in music education and selected by the CMEA state board. "It's clear he is a musician and teacher of the highest caliber," Dea said.

This fall, he will guest conduct the high school honor bands from Contra Costa and Solano counties and the California All-State Junior High Concert Band in Fresno.

Collinsworth is Director of Bands and Music Education at SSU, where his duties include directing the university's Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Chamber Winds, teaching instrumental conducting, and various courses in the music education program. As Director of the Music Education program, he leads a seminar course for credential candidates in music education and supervises student teachers.

Prior to his appointment at SSU in 2008, Collinsworth was a successful music educator for nearly twenty years in California public schools. He maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator throughout California and the Western states. His doctoral project, a critical edition full score to Samuel Barber's Commando March, is published by G. Schirmer.

Collinsworth holds a Doctor of the Musical Arts degree, with an emphasis in Conducting from Arizona State University, where he studied with Professor Gary W. Hill. He received a Master of Music degree in Applied Saxophone from the University of Nevada at Reno, where he studied with David Ehrke, and a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education, also from the University of Nevada. He has participated in conducting clinics with teachers Frederick Fennell, Eugene Corporon, H. Robert Reynolds, Jerry Junkin, Craig Kirchhoff, and Robert Halseth.

Collinsworth is an active member of several professional organizations. He currently serves as Vice President of the California Band Directors Association, and is President-Elect of the Bay Section of the California Music Educators Association. In addition, he is a member of the College Band Directors National Association, the National Association of Music Education, the Northern California Band Directors Association, and is an honorary member of the Kappa Kappa Psi band fraternity.
