Professor of economics Carlos Benito passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011. He died peacefully in hospice with his family at his side where he had been for several weeks. His family will arrange for a memorial later in September.
Dr. Benito earned his Ph.D. from UC Davis and was active in research with the University of California, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization and Non-Governmental Organizations in a number of countries, from Egypt to Mexico, Latin America and the Caribbean. He taught at SSU for more than two decades until his retirement this past spring.
According to Sue Hayes, Economics Department chair: "Carlos contributed greatly to the Economics Department. He transformed our international economics curriculum and was a valued colleague. He was known for being very thoughtful and cared deeply about his students."
A student wrote the following about her class with Carlos. "Great Professor. His style is magnificent. He is really good at motivating students. His focus is research, but it seems like he loves the whole world."
