SSU Stages Educator Job Fair as Teacher Hiring Improves

teacher.pngTeacher hiring trends are on the rise leading the SSU School of Education to host an Educator Job Fair from 2-5 p.m. on April 19 in the Student Recreation Center to help connect student teachers to local school districts.

Job fair coordinator Pamela Van Halsema says the School of Education was inspired to try the job fair this year because the tide is turning in teacher employment in the North Bay. "We have been receiving many more requests from school districts to post job announcements," she said.

"We were heartened that most districts did not experience a flood of pink slips this year as we have witnessed in the past. We also know that there are many retirements in public schools that are opening up opportunities for our beginning teachers."

The fair features representatives from various districts including Cloverdale Unified, Novato Unified, Sonoma Valley Unified, Fairfield-Suisun Unified, and Summit Public Schools to name a few. There will also be representatives from schools and charters from as far away as San Jose and Sacramento.

Credential candidates from all areas of public education are invited to attend and meet with potential employers, ask questions, and hand out resumes. Some will even have on-the-spot interviews. Special education, elementary and high school educators and administrators are all encouraged to come and seek positions in public schools.

Troy Sherman of the Ukiah Unified School District is grateful for the opportunity to attend the fair. The district came to SSU last year seeking teachers, many of which are currently employed by Ukiah Unified.

Sherman said that they have a huge need for teachers right now, especially for special education and mathematics.
