Based on five years of teaching and research, on five continents and in 25 countries, the TEDx talk focuses on finding solutions at the nexus of what Rohwedder calls "mega-challenges." "Ecological Handprints: Lifting Humanity While Lowering Our Footprint" is a story of model programs from around the world that are turning their "vision into a verb" as they both lift humanity and lower our footprint.

TEDx is a spin-off of the annual TED conference started 25 years ago in southern California. TEDx are smaller, local self-organized events with the same purpose as TED: spread ideas worth sharing.

Professor and chair of the department of environmental studies and planning, Rohwedder has been a consultant on numerous international projects including creation of water education programs for youth in the Middle East peace process. Rohwedder has also established digital networks in developing countries long before public internet was available in those areas.

The Timeline is both a visual and interactive historical web source available to both students and the general public to use.

Marquez himself had always been interested in history, and being a resident of Sonoma, wanted to create a project that put past events of the county in both geographical and historical context.

He also wanted to experiment with displaying library-held content on the web for a new 'mashup' project, or a project that combines two or more disparate bits of information and make them into a new one. In Marquez's case he took geo-location with the help of Google Maps with content from the library's Regional and Special Collections.

"The Timeline combines images with text and maps to show where exactly in the county something happened or where someone lived," said Marquez.

He worked closely with Dayle Reilly and Lynn Prime, of the Regional and Special Collections department to create a list of major points in Sonoma County's history. After being bestowed with a RSCAP mini-grant, he was able to hire two graduate history students to do background research, find resources and write an abstract about each historical event, person or thing.

The Timeline itself was created using open source software from MIT called Simile Exhibit. The software runs using an application programming interface (API) provided by MIT and a Google spreadsheet that holds all the metadata.

"The main reason to do this was to have fun with a web project...what a great way to learn about local history and to create a project that might have use beyond the walls of the University. The project is potentially beneficial for students in a K-12 history class setting," said Marquez.

Marquez received his Master's of Library and Information Science (MLIS) from University of Washington in 2005 and is currently getting his MBA from Portland State.

Approximately 2,300 students are eligible to walk for their diplomas as their families and friends watch. The event historically draws more than 10,000 people to the Commencement lawn. The ceremonies will be held rain or shine.

Ceremonies are scheduled at 9 a.m. for the Schools of Science and Technology and the Social Sciences and at 3 p.m. for the Schools of Education, Arts and Humanities, and Business and Economics.

They can be viewed live online by following a link to be available that day on SSU's homepage (www.sonoma.edu). It will be archived for later viewing at streaming.sonoma.edu.

Keynote speaker for both ceremonies is Dr. Marc Lamont Hill who is one of the leading hip-hop generation intellectuals in the country. His work, which covers topics such as culture, politics, and education, has appeared in numerous journals, magazines, books, and anthologies. Dr. Hill has lectured widely and provides regular commentary for media outlets like NPR, Washington Post, Essence Magazine, and the New York Times. Since 2009 he has been on the faculty of Columbia University as Associate Professor of Education at Teachers College.

Trained as an anthropologist of education, Dr. Hill holds a Ph.D. (with distinction) from the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on the intersections between culture, politics, and education. He is particularly interested in locating various sites of possibility for political resistance, identity work, and knowledge production outside of formal schooling contexts. Particular sites of inquiry include prisons, Black bookstores, and youth cultural productions.

Honorary degrees will be presented to both Sanford I. Weill, (Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters), and his wife Joan Weill, (Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts). As the major donors of $12 million to the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Hall, Lawn and Commons at the Donald and Maureen Green Music Center at SSU they have shared not only their resources but the strength of their leadership and experience to lead the project to near completion. They receive these awards in recognition of their many contributions to their community and their promotion of education and the arts.

Student commencement speakers are Amber Coyne for the morning ceremony and Alison Sutton for the afternoon ceremony. Coyne is graduating as a Presidential Scholar with a 4.0 GPA with a B.S. in biology. She plans to get her master's degree in public health as well a medical degree in order to become a pediatrician. Sutton is receiving her B.A. in communications and plans to take her passion for public relations to either reputation or crisis management.

Prior to the May 12 ceremonies, four special celebrations take place on the SSU campus to acknowledge the accomplishments of students of diverse cultural backgrounds and orientations.
For the fifth year in a row, please join President Arminana, Provost Rogerson, Vice-President Schlereth as well as other cabinet members, faculty, staff, students, family and supporters in marching with the SSU contingent.

This year's theme is Global Equality, and as the only official CSU campus represented in the parade, it sends a strong message about our campus' commitment to inclusiveness and diversity.

Those interested in attending should wear some form of Sonoma State University apparel, from a t-shirt to a ball cap to an SSU boa - anything to associate you with the rest of the larger contingent but that still allows you to express diversity and individuality.

Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, as the parade consists of a long walk. Also plan accordingly for the unpredictable San Francisco weather (sunscreen to cool weather jacket).

The assembly area is Beale Street between Mission and Howard (you can ask for the Sonoma State parade contingent). The parade starts at 10:30 a.m, however plan on being at the parade location by 10 a.m.

Public transportation is a good idea, as they expect hundreds of thousands of people to be in the city for the event. An easy way is to take the ferry from Larkspur which will drops passengers very near the start of the parade. More information is available at http://goldengate.org/news/ferry/prideferry.php.

Golden Gate bus service takes riders to Transbay Terminal - again, very close to where the parade contingents gather. Bus schedules for Route 80 are available at http://goldengatetransit.org/schedules/pages/Bus-Schedules.php.

CFA rejected CSU's proposal without offering any counter-proposals. CSU Vice Chancellor of Human Resources Gail Brooks said the university is baffled by the union's behavior.

"We are very disappointed that CFA chose to walk out and we were not able to bring these negotiations to a successful conclusion," said Brooks. "It appears to us that the only issue left on the table is the amount of taxpayer dollars that is paid for union leave time for the CFA President and Political Action Committee positions. We have said all along that we want a new contract, and CSU remains willing to continue the negotiation process at any time to resolve these differences."

Both CSU and the faculty union had agreed to resume negotiations on a number of issues remaining including the appointment and evaluation of temporary faculty; fee waivers for employees and the amount of leave time paid by CSU for union officials.

In their April 6 settlement proposal, (prior to CFA's strike vote), the CFA - contrary to its statements to the media - proposed to accept maintaining salaries at their current levels, with subsequent re-opening opportunities in the remaining two years of the contract if CSU added a provision to suspend restrictions on concerted activities.

On May 5, CSU presented the faculty union with a settlement proposal that included a negotiated agreement on temporary faculty, evaluations, discipline, as well as extending fee waivers for dependents up to age 25. By making this proposal, CSU believed it had addressed all of the five issues left on the table at the start of the May 3 negotiations. The only exception was that CSU said it would no longer continue to pay for the leave time used by the CFA President and Political Action committee positions to conduct union business.

The CSU had also expressed a willingness to meet CFA's request to revisit changes on coach fee waivers; providing preferences to faculty whose sabbatical was denied due to budget reasons, and improvement to parental leave. Finally, CFA informed the CSU bargaining team that it had decided to remove academic freedom from any list of remaining issues.

The next step in the bargaining process is the appointment of a fact-finding panel headed by an outside neutral party who will hear arguments from both sides and then make a recommendation as to the merits of each proposal.

Congressman Mike Thompson with SSU students discussing student loan crisis. (Left) Kia Kolderup-Lane, and (right) Alex Boyar, outgoing Associated Students president, and Christian George. (Photo by Alex Hallmark.)

"Terror is what students are feeling," said outgoing Associated Students president Alex Boyar to Congressman Mike Thompson as he spoke about the student loan crisis with seven other SSU students last week.

Thompson came to campus to hear from SSU students so he could reflect their realities at the Congressional hearings which began Tuesday (May 8) on the expiration of an interest rate reduction included in the 2007 College Cost Reduction and Access Act.

Commonly known as the Stafford loans or Federal Direct Loan, the current rate of 3.4% expires on July 1, 2012 and without intervention will double to 6.8%. Congress has only two months to take care of a problem that affects more than 7.4 million students across the country.

In more than an hour of conversation in the Sue Jameson room in Stevenson Hall, Thompson came away with a sobering picture of how high levels of student loan debt will impact students and their families in the future.

Angelina Richter described her single mom who would be homeless if she lost her job and can't even consider sending her sister to college.

Anthony Gallino's parents took out a $17,000 loan and he says he is always worrying about their finances and the impact on their lives as he makes his way through college.

He is also very concerned that he will become disenfranchised by not being able to take a job in political science for which he is studying.

"Life is not going as we were promised," he said. "It is not the same as our parent's experience."

Katy Havens says she is baffled by the lack of support for education in the nation. "How are we going to create a good workforce without one?" She wants to go to graduate school but the thought of "taking out a loan I can't afford to pay off is terrifying."

Kia Kolderup-Lane developed a 50-page thesis for her political science degree on why education improves conditions in a society. "Everything progresses with an education. It must be a priority," she says. Even though she has a six-month grace period before payments on her Stafford loans come due, Kia faces having to make payments for her private student loan immediately after graduation and even before she has a job.

Boyar says the attacks on education funding made to low- and middle-income students are ultimately separating the classes by cutting out the middle class. "The working family takes the biggest hit," he says.

"This is blocking our ability to consume and contribute to the economy," he said about the relentless cuts to education. "We are a giant generation and they are blocking our access to goods and services."

One student said that those with loans to pay off will not be able to buy houses or cars for a very long time. Another said her parents would be dead before the loan they took out for her education is paid off.

The fact that some former college students have social security benefits or wages garnished to pay off loans reveals the long term effects of the crisis, one student said.
Another pointed out that President Obama and his wife only just paid off their own student loans a few years ago.

Student loan debt ($867 billion) now tops U.S. credit card debt ($704 billion) according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in a report on Planet Money. At http://www.npr.org/blogs/money/2012/04/18/150909686/what-america-owes-in-student-loans.

Many US officials say America faces the very real possibility of another major economic collapse like the devastating home mortgage crisis.

Even Thompson had first hand knowledge of the crisis, having polled his own staff for their experience. One member had a six- figure loan to pay off. "It hampers everything you try to do in the future," she told him.

With three to four tuition hikes in the recent past, classes cut back, job prospects dim, one student asked "Are we educating an entire generation to live in their parents' basement?"

Matthew's attendance at student events, his humor, and his consistent support is especially noteworthy."
