Upper Division General Education

The university has a list of courses certified to meet GENERAL EDUCATION (GE) requirements in Categories A through E (see details in #9 below).  If an SSU course is listed there, then it meets the specified GE requirement.  If an SSU course is not listed there then it does not meet the GE requirement.  A way to cross-check is also available by looking up the official course description in the current university Catalog – if the description does not state that a course meets a CSU GE requirement then it does not.

Important points to remember when enrolling to meet the UPPER DIVISION General Education (UDGE) requirement:

  1. Nine (9) units of UDGE are required for the BSN

  2. Three (3) of those 9 units are met by the nursing major leaving the BSN student with 6 units of UDGE to meet

  3. All CSU General Education requirements (48 units for transfer students) can be met at the community college and university (“lower division” or 100-200 numbered) level

  4. UPPER DIVISION General Education requirements may only be met at the university level with approved 300-400 numbered GE courses

  5. Current community college students should plan to enroll in 3-6 units of Upper Division GE - Area C at SSU count toward the 9 unit UDGE requirement, the 9 unit GE in residence requirement, and the 12 units Area C requirement.

  6. ADN graduates usually have 6-9 units of Category C (Arts & Humanities) remaining to be met at the time of transfer to SSU.  In most cases it is wise to select UDGE from Category C to simultaneously meet UDGE GE in Residence AND Area C requirements

  7. If the student has the Ethnic  Studies requirement remaining to be met, then the UDGE course in Area C may be chosen to also meet ethnic studies (* next to the course on the list indicates it meets Ethnic Studies requirement).

  8. Passing the CLEP for Human Growth and Development will award 3 units of Psych 302 on the student’s SSU transcript.  Psych 302 credit by CLEP meets UDGE but must be petitioned (until further notice) to count as General Education “in residence.”  Enrolling in Psych 302 at SSU meets 3 units of UDGE AND 3 units of GE in residence.

  9. The list of currently approved General Education courses may be found at
