GIS geographic information system...
Introduction
The Northwest Information Center (NWIC) is developing and maintaining a Geographic Information System (GIS) of Resources and Studies recorded within the Information Center's geographic area.
This inventory is maintained in a Microsoft SQL database and ESRI GIS geodatabase. The databases are interconnected through customized applications. The customized applications, their corresponding databases and Adobe PDF digital documents of Resource Records and Study Reports comprise the NWIC GIS.
Microsoft SQL Database
MS SQL is used to inventory all Resource Records and Study Reports. Identifier numbers are assigned and pertinent attribute information is recorded. The database records are easily accessible through a user friendly, customized application. The application can search with multiple queries and produce various reports which have been designed to meet the NWIC's workflow.

ESRI ArcMap Component
ESRI ArcGIS is used to map the location and shape of Resource Records and Study Reports in a geodatabase. The shapes are categorized in datasets and symbolized as layers overlaid on various types of basemap images such as USGS topographic maps, aerial images, parcels, streets etc.. Customized tools have been created and added to ArcMap for selecting features within a research project area and to produce maps.

NWIC Record Search Products:
The NWIC GIS produces maps of selected resource site and study report features within a search area and provides access to the related site records and study report documents in Adobe PDF file format.
