Nature ProgramsNaturalist-led Hikes | Field Workshops | Naturalist Training | Elementary School Field Trips Naturalist-led hikesEvery Fall and Spring, folks of all ages are invited to join us for naturalist-led hikes. Hikes are appropriate for families, friends, and individuals. Under the skilled direction of one of our trained naturalists, these two to three hour-long excursions into the wilds of the Preserve give visitors an inside look at the striking diversity and quiet beauty found here. No reservations are required for our regularly scheduled hikes. Just meet at the parking lot on Saturdays at 10 a.m. We do not cancel hikes because of inclement weather. If it is raining, just wear appropriate attire! Adults are charged $3; children 12 and under are free. Dress in layers and bring water and a snack. Special groups can often be accommodated. Fall 2007: The schedule will be posted shortly. Field WorkshopsOn selected weekend days we are proud to offer a series of field workshops focused on specific aspects of Fairfield Osborn Preserve's natural history. The sessions are led by instructors who are specialists in their fields. The instructors and the students together create an exciting educational experience for those interested in the Preserve's remarkable natural history. Wild mushrooms, rocks and soils, wildflowers, ethnobotany, and birding are subjects of some workshops we offer. Join us for a day in the field that promises to be instructive and engaging. Fees are variable depending on workshop, and pre-registration by mail is required. These workshops are appropriate for adults. Children 13 and over may register and attend with a parent or guardian. A complete list of currently-planned workshops may be found on our Workshop Registration Form. Naturalist TrainingTwice a year (September & February) the Preserve holds a comprehensive Naturalist Training Program to teach budding naturalists the basics of environmental education and local natural history. College students and community members are trained to staff our environmental education program, one of the largest of its kind in Northern California. Over 4,500 students, community groups, and individuals visit the Preserve yearly, all in the company of one of our trained naturalists. Environmental education seeks to inform students of the Earth's vitality, its interconnected systems, and its biodiversity. Using activities and inquiry-based educational techniques, our Naturalist Training Program teaches by example. Trainees take turns leading, teaching, learning, exploring . . . experiencing directly what they will be sharing with Preserve visitors. The Naturalist Training Program is held in February and September, and is open to all interested potential naturalists in exchange for a reasonable minimum volunteer commitment. Call the Preserve office to reserve your place in the next session. There is a $50 materials fee. Elementary School Field TripsThe diversity and beauty of the Preserve make it an ideal outdoor classroom. Under the direction of one of the Preserve's trained field naturalists, small groups of students investigate natural habitats, become acquainted with the creatures they discover, and come to understand the place of each in the ecosystem. We focus on fun, hands-on learning experiences that encourage students to interact directly with the natural world and participate actively in their own education. A trip to Fairfield Osborn Preserve provides students with a unique learning opportunity that often makes a significant impact in their young lives. Help the kids in your life take advantage of the marvelous outdoor classroom Fairfield Osborn Preserve has to offer . . . ask their teachers to schedule a field trip with us! There is a $3 fee per participant. Our environmental education field trips are very popular and trips are assigned based on a lottery conducted twice a year. If you are an elementary school teacher and would like to take your class on a field trip to the Preserve, please contact the site manager. |
