Course Description

Professor: Dr. Les Brooks. Lecture, 3 hours; Laboratory, 3 hours. General principles of chemistry selected from the areas of biochemistry, analytical, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry. This course is designed for science majors and students taking pre-professional curricula. Satisfies GE, category B1 (Physical Sciences). Prerequisites: Chem 115A.

General Chemistry 115B Syllabus

Required Text:

Zumdahl, "Chemistry" , Fourth Edition

Supplemental Texts:

"Partial Solutions Guide for Chemistry"

"Study Guide for Chemistry"

Model Kits:

Model kits come in a variety of types and prices, but they are only useful if you buy one that you are willing to use and understand. Any standard organic model kit can be used in most chemistry courses. Model kits can also be checked out of the stock room.


Grades-

The grade in 115B will be determined by weekly homework, weekly quizzes, midterm exams, laboratory work and a final exam. The point distribution is indicated below.

  • Attendance ----- 100 points
  • Homework -----100 points
  • Quizzes --------- 100 points
  • Hour Exams --- 300 points
  • Laboratoy ------ 100 points
  • Final Exam ----- 200 points
  • Total Points ---- 900 points

Lecture-

Attendance in lecture is required and will be graded.

Quizes-

Quizes will be given almost every week in recitation or laboratory. Quiz questions will cover material covered in lecture the previous week, the entire homework assignment and lab work from the previous week. There will be eleven quizes and ten out of the eleven quizzes will be counted toward the final grade.

Recitation -

The Monday recitation is a time to ask questions and practice problem solving. Each recitation professor will discuss problem solving and go over practice problems during class. Please come with a list of questions to ask. Recitation quizes will be given during the last fifteen minutes of the class. Attendance in recitation is mandatory for a passing grade (with one unexcused absence allowed).

Laboratory -

Attendance in laboratory is mandatory for a passing grade with one unexcused absence allowed.

Final Exam -

The final exam will not be the American Chemical Society Standardized Exam and will not be cumulative. The final exam will cover only the Chemistry 115B material.
