Cyanobacteria, formerly called "blue-green algae" are in the Kingdom Eubacteria.

Diatoms are beautiful unicellular eukaryotic cells in the Kingdom Protista.

These Shelf Fungi, in the Kingdom Fungi, are one of the major decomposers of the biosphere, releasing nutrients back into the soil.

Sunflowers, in the Kingdom Plantae, are members of one of the largest plant families in the world, the Asteraceae, formerly called the Compositae because each floral head is composed of numerous smaller flowers.

Lewis' Moonsnail, a large carnivorous snail of intertidal mudflats, is a member of the Kingdom Animalia, Phylum Mollusca, and is the only moonsnail on the west coast of North America.

Class Meetings for Biology 121:
Monday and Wednesday from 1:00 - 2:15 in Darwin 2 (in the basement).
Laboratory sessions will be held on Monday & Wednesday from 2:25 - 5:15,
and Tuesday from 9:25-12:15, in Darwin 207.

Here are some suggestions which I call "Rules for Success" in Biology. I sincerely hope you benefit from them!

RULES FOR SUCCESS

Read assigned chapter(s) before you come to class.
Attend every class period.
Take charge of your own learning. Study for understanding of the concepts, not just memorization of "facts".
Be alert and take good notes. Go over your notes soon after class and make extra notes from your reading.
Consider studying with other students outside of class to discuss the material and prepare for exams.
Above all, determine to do your very best this semester!

Textbook for Biology 121, Fall 2002:

Campbell, Neil. 2002. Biology, Sixth Edition, Benjamin/Cummings Publishing Company.

Students who wish to be graded in a non-traditional mode (CR/NC, credit/ no credit) must file a " change of program" form indicating that grading choice at the Office of Admissions and Records. CR will be assigned for an earned grade of C- (70%) or better.

Attendance: It is expected that you attend every class period. No late examinations or quizzes will be given without a written medical excuse or prior arrangements with the instructor.
