For this assignment you are to design a two-week (more or less) unit of instruction for middle school or high school mathematics. If possible, choose a topic area that you think you will cover in your student teaching next semester, so that you may actually be able to use the unit plan in practice. Or you may choose to write a plan for a unit that you would like to teach someday. For additional resources, see the Web-based Assignments page.

An instructional unit is essentially a complete, coherent sequence of lessons designed to cover a single topic or theme. A well-designed unit has a set of learning goals or objectives; a cohesive plan for day-by-day instruction, including some sort of introduction and conclusion for the unit as a whole; and built-in methods of assessment. The unit should incorporate a variety of learning activities, emphasize students' active participation, develop students' literacy, use appropriate materials and technology, and integrate several aspects of the content (e.g., mathematical skills, concepts, and the five NCTM process standards).

This assignment has two parts, each described below. You are encouraged to draw on books, teachers, the Internet, and other sources for ideas, but adapt them to your own students and your own style, and be sure to cite fully any sources used. The exact format and length of the paper you submit are up to you. It should be neat and clear, and it should address the issues specified.

Unit plan

Your written plan for instruction should include the following:

  • Context (title, grade, types of students, length and frequency of class periods, textbook if used significantly)
  • Learning objectives for the unit
  • Description of each day's learning activities (in and out of class) for the entire unit (limited descriptions, a paragraph or so for each day, not full-blown lesson plans)
  • List of instructional materials, including electronic technology
  • Description of how you will assess student learning and your teaching during the unit (be specific)
  • List of relevant California Mathematics Content Standards

Analysis (2 or 3 pages)

Analyze the content and design of your unit, using the following categories:

  • Content: What are the important mathematical ideas being learned? How are they developed in this unit? In what forms are they represented?
  • Sequence: What relevant content should students have studied prior to this unit? What relevant content will this unit prepare students for later?
  • Processes: How does this unit address each of the five process standards in NCTM's PSSM?
  • Equity: What features of this unit plan make the content accessible to diverse students, including English language learners?

Hand in a draft of your unit plan for feedback only (no grade) on the date specified in the syllabus. The draft should include the context, learning objectives, CA standards, and learning activities--but not the materials, assessment, or analysis. The final version must include all of these. The criteria against which your completed unit plan will be judged are delineated in the Unit Plan Rubric.
