JUMP TO THIS WEEK'S ASSIGNMENTS

Due November 14

PLEASE BRING A GRAPHING CALCULATOR TO CLASS NEXT WEEK if you have one; we'll try to use them for some more activities.

Readings -- see Calendar in this web site.

Continue working on your Unit Plan; see assignment for details. Final version is due in class November 28.

The web-based geometry activities I was going to show you are all in Geometer's SketchPad, and they won't work if you don't have this application loaded on your computer. So instead, if you want to see what kinds of geometry software are available on the web and try some of them out, I suggest these two sites (the second one just came to me in an e-mail immediately after class this evening!):

The Math Forum @ Drexel

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives

Due October 31 & November 7

Recall that this week, October 31, you are doing independent study instead of coming to class. Your assignments for this week and next are:

Readings -- two weeks' worth -- see Calendar in this web site. Note that some of the readings are on line (the California and NCTM Standards).

Finish the partial draft of your Unit Plan; see assignment for details. E-mail (or otherwise send) me your partial draft by the end of the day, Wednesday, October 31.

And have a great Hallowe'en!!! See you in class on November 7.

Due October 24

Readings -- see Calendar in this web site. Note that some of the readings are on line (the California and NCTM Standards).

Keep working on your Unit Plan. Note also the rubric that will be used to assess your completed unit plan. You might wish to look at examples of unit plans; see the Web-Based Assignments for links. The partial draft is due October 31.

Due October 17

Readings -- see Calendar in this web site.

Make the last entry in your Pig Portfolio; instructions are here. The completed portfolio is due this week, October 17.

Keep working on your Unit Plan. Note also the rubric that will be used to assess your completed unit plan. You might wish to look at examples of unit plans; see the Web-Based Assignments for links.

After talking with Jeff about the very important topic of classroom culture, I've added a link to the Web Resources page providing access to a 444 assignment from two years ago, the PEP project, where we explored this idea in depth. You might find some useful ideas in the web site. And you'll probably be relieved that you didn't have to do the same assignment this semester!

Due October 10

Readings -- see Calendar in this web site.

Make the next entry in your Pig Portfolio; instructions are here. I've entered the last two weeks' prompts. Note that the completed portfolio is due October 17.

Begin working on your Unit Plan. Note also the rubric that will be used to assess your completed unit plan.

For next week you should at least become familiar with the assignment, take note of ideas from your reading, and choose an appropriate topic. You may also want to begin sketching out a day-by-day calendar for the unit. And you might wish to look at examples of unit plans; see the Web-Based Assignments for links.

Due October 3

Readings -- see Calendar in this web site.

Make the next entry in your Pig Portfolio; instructions are here.

Finish writing Lesson Plan #2 to hand in. Here are some things to pay attention to:

  • This second lesson plan should be a Discovery/Inquiry lesson.
  • Use the examples and the list of elements handed out last week and this week in class regarding the important components of this sort of lesson. Note especially:
    • Students' exploration should be followed by THEIR explaining their findings to others.
    • The consolidation phase is critical, so that students come away with some meanings to attach to what they did.
    • The focus of discussion should be as much on the processes as on the results.
  • Again, try to design a lesson that you might actually teach some day.
  • You are again expected to write a limited pedagogical analysis of ONE OF YOUR TWO LESSON PLANS. If you did so for the first one, you don't need to do so for this second one.
  • You might wish to look at additional examples of lesson plans; see the Web-Based Assignments for links.

If you were asked to redo Lesson Plan #1:

  • Be sure to ATTACH THE ORIGINAL VERSION WITH MY COMMENTS to the revised version you submit.
  • The revision is due October 10.

Due September 26

Readings -- see Calendar in this web site.

Make the next entry in your Pig Portfolio; instructions are here.

Begin designing Lesson Plan #2 to hand in October 3. Here are some things to pay attention to:

  • This second lesson plan should be a Discovery/Inquiry lesson. Use the example and the list of elements handed out today in class to help you consider the important components of this sort of lesson. We'll look at another example next week.
  • Again, try to design a lesson that you might actually teach some day.
  • You are again expected to write A LIMITED PEDAGOGICAL ANALYSIS; don't forget this addendum.
  • You might wish to look at additional examples of lesson plans; see the Web-Based Assignments for links.

Due September 19

Readings -- see Calendar in this web site.

Make the next entry in your Pig Portfolio; instructions are here.

Finish writing Lesson Plan #1 to hand in September 19. Here are some things to pay attention to:

  • This first lesson plan should be an Explicit Instruction (Direct Instruction) lesson. Use the example and the list of elements handed out today in class to help you consider the important components of this sort of lesson.
  • Try to design a lesson that you might actually teach some day; this will give you more payoff for your effort and will feel more real too.
  • Read the assignment carefully. In particular, note that you must write the lesson plan and then also write A LIMITED PEDAGOGICAL ANALYSIS; don't forget this addendum.
  • You might wish to look at additional examples of lesson plans; see the Web-Based Assignments for links.

Due September 12

Readings -- see Calendar in this web site.

Make the next entry in your Pig Portfolio; instructions are here.

Begin working on Lesson Plan #1, which is due September 19. Read the assignment, choose a topic, and do the content analysis this week. Your reading will supply some examples of lesson plans, and we'll devote much of next week's class to learning more about how to design and write a lesson plan.

Due September 5

Readings -- see Calendar in this web site.

Make the next entry in your Pig Portfolio; instructions are here.

Complete POW writeup to hand in; instructions are here.

Due August 29

Become familiar with this web site.

Buy both course texts.

Consider joining NCTM or CMC. Go to their web sites for more information.

Readings -- see Calendar in this web site.

Begin your Pig Portfolio; instructions are here.
