Rachel Smith

Rachel Smith

Autobiographical Sketch

Rachel's background is a mix of computers and art. She created her first computer artwork at the age of 12, on a TRS-80 computer. The process got easier four years later when she discovered the Macintosh. She enjoys more traditional media as well, including watercolor painting, manuscript illumination and (some years ago) welding.

After completing her Bachelor's degree in art education at Florida State University, Rachel taught art in a north Florida middle school before heading out to California to attend Stanford University. She earned her Master's in art education at Stanford and went on to work in the Media Lab there, where she taught faculty and students how to design and create websites.

She moved on to Sonoma State University in 1996, where she continued to help faculty learn how to use the internet effectively in the classroom. Currently she works for the CSU Center for Distributed Learning, where she designs interfaces for educational software. She translates requirements specifications into graphical user interfaces to define the look and feel of CDL's software. She also coordinates user testing for CDL projects and teaches workshops on user interface design and evaluation.

Rachel owns a small consulting firm, Indigo Gecko Design, which does graphic design and websites as well as consulting on usability engineering. She has a two-year-old son, who shows great promise with crayons.
