Unit Five

Preparing to Upload

Are you ready?

Lecture

We need to give thought to the assessment issue:

  • How are you going to assess the learning outcomes in your course?
  • How are you going to assess how well your course worked?

Here's how grades are assigned at one university:

Discipline

How Grades Are Assigned

Statistics

All grades are plotted along the normal bell curve.

Psychology

Students are asked to blot ink in their exam books, close them and turn them in. The professor opens the books and assigns the first grade that comes to mind.

History

All students get the same grade they got last year.

Religion

Grade is determined by God.

Philosophy

What is a grade?

Law School

Students are asked to defend their position of why they should receive an A.

Mathematics

Grades are variable.

Logic

If and only if the student is present for the final and the student has accumulated a passing grade then the student will receive an A else the student will not receive an A.

Computer Science

Random number generator determines grade.

Music

Each student must figure out his grade by listening to the instructor play the corresponding note (+ and - would be sharp and flat respectively).

Physical Education

Everybody gets an A.

There are many ways to assess learning in the online venue:
  • student participation in discussions (frequency, relevance, substantive quality)
  • writing assignments
  • online quizzes and exams

Assignment:

The following note in red was added 3/22/02:

You will need to think carefully about how you are going to implement this assignment.

Take a look at: How to Build a Course Website, from Macromedia's Training Cafe: http://www.trainingcafe.com/members/coursesite/

It offers easy-to-use templates if you choose not to use a course delivery system. You could even do it using a 30-day trial of Dreamweaver.

Issues to consider:

  • the web page design and layout of your learning activities (you may need to consult our own instructional staff for this, or talk to the staff in your own campus IT department).
  • what kind of interacting between/among students you're going to require.
  • the course delivery system that you intend to use to accomplish interactivity (submission of assignments and discussion).

Caution: KEEP IT SIMPLE. For this assignment, don't make your web page too complicated. Some of you are planning to teach courses online this summer. How about putting up just one learning activity from a course that you plan to teach?

It's time now to upload the learning activities that you designed in Unit 4, and test them out. Put your learning activity(ies) on a Web page and upload the page to a server as soon as possible during the first week of this unit.

Supply a short context that explains the course for which your activities apply. Be sure to include a learning objective so that learners here will understand what you are trying to teach and what they are supposed to learn.

You may use whatever course delivery system you wish (WebCT, Blackboard, eCollege, etc.).

If you need to learn the basics of WebCT designing, our WebCT specialists (Barbara Moore and Roxanna Whitaker) will give each of you a WebCT account so that you can create whatever interactivity your learning activities require.
You'll need to "enroll" in WebCT the two learners who will be working with your learning activities (go to Unit 6 to figure out who'll be learning with you).

Changed 3/22/02:

yippeeyippeeDiscussion Holiday

Instead of having a discussion this week, let's take the week off to simply reflect on:

  • What you learned
  • What problems or challenges you encountered
  • How you might have handled these more effectively
  • What surprises you found
  • What you will do differently next time
with respect to designing and uploading your module or learning activity.

Do read what each other has uploaded. If you have a burning itch to say something to someone about what they've posted, do it in email.

Meanwhile, keep working on your final "group project."
