What I Do at SSU
Russ is a “hands-on” kind of guy who uses his extensive experience with tools and test equipment to build sets, install and maintain lighting and sound equipment, and help to guide students as they pursue their studies in technical theatre.
My Bio
Russ spent his teens and twenties working both sides of the curtain in community-theatre in northern New Jersey where he also earned a BA in History from William Patterson College. Always having had a knack for fixing things Russ found work servicing automated film-processing equipment, which eventually led him to work with x-ray film-processors and medical equipment. After a 25-year career installing and servicing medical imaging and diagnostic technology, Russ “retired” from UCSF in order to return to activities that were closer to this heart, like live theatre. Working in the Scene Shop seems to fulfill that requirement, allowing Russ to build, wire, repair, and tinker with all manner of theatre-based technologies.
Russ’s other interests include: Education (he has a K-12 teaching credential and serves as a Trustee for the Old Adobe Union School District); Brewing (he’s a home-brewer and Honorary Grand Master beer judge); Acoustic Instruments (he plays guitar and builds and repairs instruments); Reuse/Recycling (Russ serves as the moderator for the Petaluma FreeCycle group).
Russ lives in Petaluma with his wife Debbie Koehler and has two children, Sean and Katie.
