What I Do at SSU

As I teach Choreography, I delight in facilitating a young dancer’s investigation and discovery of what her or his body really wants to say. I make dances for students to perform, teach History of Dance, Dances of the World, and Analysis and Criticism of Dance.  With a strong background in somatics and anatomy, I find ways for dancers to fully inhabit their bodies, minds and spirits.  As Director of the Dance Program, I guide the dance curriculum and actively seek faculty who are intriguing contemporary dance artists and human beings who care about our students.

My Bio

MA, Dance,  Mills College
BA, University of California, Berkeley

Nancy Lyons began dancing as a child in New Mexico. In her early teens, she trained and performed with the remarkable dance artist Elizabeth Waters, formerly lead dancer with Hanya Holm.  Nancy moved to the West Coast where she continued to study dance technique, improvisation, choreography and somatics and perform in the San Francisco Bay Area.  She has taught and performed solo and group work nationally and internationally in Europe and Asia. With Rebecca Fuller, former Chair of the Dance Department at Mills College, she co-authored Openings and Inner Workings, The Moving Box, and The Moving Book.
